So great! Maybe I missed the obvious while I was poking around, but where is the game data saved? I'd like to sync it to the cloud to go back and forth between my PC and Steam Deck. So happy this exists :D
I installed this on all the computers in my computer lab classroom for kids to play after assignments, or when the internet goes out. Thanks for making this neat game!
Incredible game, I've been having a lot of fun with it for the past few days. I do have a small issue, though, and that's with the Arid Airspace stage in Beyond Mode. I'm currently struggling to beat it, not because it's too hard, but because I keep accidentally touching the keys that take you to the purple coin stage. I had a situation where I was literal seconds away (sub-80 meters) from clearing the stage, but fell onto one of those keys through the ground and had to start over. Maybe I'm the only one having this issue since I can't find any other comments talking about this, but maybe you could make it so that the key disappears from the level when you clear that purple coin stage once, since you can click the key in the selection screen to replay it anyway.
Other than that, absolutely solid experience. It's got far more meat to it than I expected, and the spritework and music selection/remixes are fantastic.
Nice little game but the bosses having randomization sucks. Mostly SS I don't feel like I'm ever improving when I fight him I feel like I'm getting lucky. Also, him instantly blasting your ass when you take down his elemental shields while the hazards are still on screen is bullshit. The player should get a moment to get ready before the next shield pops in. I know complaints about difficulty are hard to make without looking like a bitch but you have to admit that's a fair point.
Also while on the topic of the elemental shields I don't think he should throw a twinkle chaser at you during them until you hit him once. It would be best to give the player a bit to get what the hazard is before giving it an extra thing to dodge.
I was able to install it pretty easily through the NonSteamLaunchers plugin for Decky Loader. That plugin even creates shortcuts with full art to launch in Game Mode, so it makes the process much easier than installing the game manually in Desktop Mode.
Download it in desktop mode, extract the zip to a folder. Then right click the .exe file and select "Add to Steam". Go back to gaming mode and select properties on the game, and make sure it uses a proton compatibility layer, or else it won't launch.
Literally only 1% of Nintendo fangames get DMCA'd. AM2R got C&D'd because Nintendo was about to release their own Metroid 2 remake. So unless Nintendo is cooking up a Shy Guy surfing game of their own, then this should be fine.
Hey, requesting that you buff the water shield, it's fairly useless as-is... fire shields are strong, cause you can KO enemies. Thunder shields give you a extra jump. Water shields... just bounce. They're... fairly useless...
Encountered a new issue where if a blarg or eep enut causes an eathquake at the end of a level transition the screen shaking persists for the whole playthrough until the player dies. This makes endurance mode a bit nauseating when it occurs. Pausing does not fix it. My head kinda hurts now having to play so long with screen shaking.
Also a common collectible such as coins would be nice! Even if they dont so much. Powerups would be cool too. But above all else, i def think the game would benefit from local multiplayer the most. ^
A glitch where the player jumps or falls while pressed against a wall causing them to get stuck in the corner of the walls collision. (i lost 2 endurance rounds because i got stuck unable to jump over a wall...)
The electric shield not protecting against thunder storms seems like an oversight. (i sorta wanna argue roto discs are electric and should also be resisted by the electric shield)
Bubble shield should also protect against the bubble hazard gizmo. It just makes too much sense.
Some levels are completely incompatible with upside down layouts. Some lead to walls that are impossible to avoid like angel causing a giant wall thats exit is blocked by the water. The asset either needs to be adjusted or not allowed to show up upside down. (bottomless pits are still fine as theres many ways to deal with that)
Semi solid platforms should also work when upside down. Sometimes it leads to entire screens where theres no solid ground because the platform is only solid facing right side up.
Bubble hazards hide behind fake walls making it impossible to know their location
A glitch where the normal water floor is still loaded in the stage when using flash flood and ceiling together.
Not sure if this is a glitch but mirror mode reverses the left and right controls, when in 'Beyond' mode it did not do that. This makes it rather hard to control. I would rather reverse controls be its own option instead of maker mode being the way it is now.
Your game starts at 01:10. Impressive work! Controlling Shy Guy was easy and responsive. We couldn't get JoyToKey working but that's on us. The characters all looked and behaved perfectly. We loved unlocking new costumes and having two modes made the game feel complete. Excellent concept and execution.
I think you could add 'gravity' as a another parameter to the custom maps. Essentially changing how fast we fall or float when jumping. the change in speed would change how we approach plateforms and avoiding enemies. It would definately be cool for its own level gimmick since it could be better designed with the changes in mind. Not something im in any hurry to see added, the game is fun as is.
I finally beat that exceedingly unfair Flappy Guy level Wet Dry Vault. I think i went insane... lost several days of sleep... but the RNG was finally in my favor.... Definately needs rebalancing.... Too many unfair hazard combinations and plenty of times where you are just forced to take damage. Scuttlebugs have bounced me into hazards or blocked off areas, and even overlap with boo buddies making them almost impossible to go through at the wrong time. Big boo can sometimes just block off narrow paths which is what killed me at 3500 the first time i almost won... Its definately completely random if you'll have enough room to avoid him.
Now i can finally 100% the game. I pray for anyone else trying to follow suit.
Beat Beyond Mode last night, really enjoyed this game!! There were a handful of points where things felt a bit unbalanced but other than that I had a great time with it. If there's ever any more skins or enemies in the future, it'd be super cool to Ninji added especially with all of the SMB2 theming going on. Thank you to everyone who worked on this for making such a great game!

This game was made with Unity, and the save file is in the default location. On Windows, that is:
%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\<companyname>\<productname>
You might have to enable viewing hidden files to see it. For This game specifically it's:
%userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\LucasPucas\ShyGuySurfing
If you pop that in Windows explorer, it should bring you there :)

Sick game, I had some trouble setting up the gamepad controls but it worked out in the end!
11/10 would be a 12/10 with playable Ninji.
Very well done! Love the music and the boss fights! A simple concept really well executed!

Really really fun to play. Works well on Steam Deck
Really Fun!! but HAAARD!! :D
Thank you for making this game. Its a lot of fun.

SURF'S UP!
Plays incredibly well on Steam Deck when you turn on Proton Compatibility.
How did you get set it up on SteamDeck? I can't get it to download

the stuff i'd do to get this game on mobile, just popping this for a quick few minutes anywhere would be so fun
Agreed, would be a banger mobile game.
Freaking Awesome
This is hilarious but I suspect that Nintendo will be after you with a DMCA take-down request and possibly a lawsuit if you're really unlucky.
If anything they might DMCA you but you will not be facing any lawsuit unless you ignore the DMCA request. They have to notice you first anyways.

I mean, Fire is just the best, the other two are only debatably good.
I really like the kitbashed assets and the tight gameplay! Had to use both hands and switch to the serious gamer (tm) position.
Nintendo lawyers running in a distance
Made another video
it's like those bullet bill flash games but with a different mario enemy. JUST-A WHAT I NEEDED!
beautiful
Time to make Shygal mod
Will there be a version for Android or Mac?

Multiplayer would be great to have! Other than that, this game is perfect! Such fun to play! ^^
Great work! I love the sprites! :)

A coin mode would be nice, maybe something to use in maker mode as an alt win condition... but maybe in regular play it can be used to buy more skins.
I downloaded the game but I dont know how to get in to the game
this is really fun. the bosses are really well done
Please add controller support within the game itself, would love to play on Steam Deck!
Just remap the controls! you only need to do the few buttons, here's what I picked:
WASD to Dpad
SPACE to A
SHIFT to X
ENTER to Start
ESCAPE to Select
This worked a treat
This game brings me joy <3
I despise the Silver Surfer
Some issues that need fixing:
ta bien
It's playable via Winlator.

Made a video
I had a bunch of fun with this! Conquering the airship section and Reznor in particular were a really hard but satisfying challenge.
Is there a place where I can find the music featured in the game? I really liked some of the arrangements.
